Teaching Responsible Citizenship and Social Skills In addition to teaching history to satisfy the demands of the curriculum, our books center on showing children how to become responsible adults, who take their citizenship seriously and who know how to be assertive, yet unselfish and caring. These kinds of lessons can only be taught efficiently through fiction, by showing young adults successfully using certain modes of behavior to attain their goals, while learning from their mistakes.
Cherishing our American Heritage and Understanding the Mistakes of our European Forefathers. In the beginning, when the author was asked to write American Historical Fiction, she automatically included the stories of Native Americans in books because it seemed impossible to talk about America at all without mentioning the enormous contributions of the Indians. We owe everything from our favorite sports to our precious Constitution to the Native American lifestyle that we so blithely dismiss. Later, when she began to research various tribes, she found that Native Americans were so fed up with white people “knowing” everything about them, but getting it all wrong, that they just wanted to be left alone. At length she came to the conclusion that, while Indians have had well over 10,000 years of bliss, existing on American soil, white people weren’t likely to enjoy more than 500 years, if that, on this continent, unless they began to pay attention to their “forefathers,” meaning the Indians. White people need to learn some of the basic values that made Indian civilization endure where others failed, such as conservation and sharing. More importantly, our planet has reached a point now where it becomes imperative that white people learn to cooperate with Indian people to preserve it. This is the most important lesson the author can think of to pass on to future generations, if they are to survive. This, after all, is the real lesson our history has to teach us, if we are willing to listen.
